Georgetown sits at the mouth of the Demerara River and is Guyana's capital and largest city.[1] Its wide avenues, canals and wooden colonial buildings make it unlike any other Caribbean capital. UNESCO has three Georgetown entries on Guyana's World Heritage Tentative List.[2]

Safety first: the US, UK and Canadian governments all name Stabroek Market, Bourda Market, the Botanical Gardens, the National Park and the Sea Wall as places where visitors have been targeted. Visit in daylight, ideally with a guide or group, and do not carry valuables.[3][4][5]

St George's Cathedral

An Anglican cathedral on Church Street, built of timber in the Gothic Revival style and about 43.5 m (143 ft) tall. It was designed by Sir Arthur Blomfield, opened on 24 August 1892. It is on UNESCO's Tentative List.[2][6]

City Hall

A Gothic style wooden building that is also on UNESCO's Tentative List.[2]

Stabroek Market

The city's largest market, on Water Street, under an iron and steel structure with a clock tower. It was built in 1880 and 1881 by the Edgemoor Iron Company of Delaware.[7] US government staff are not allowed to visit it because of crime, so go only with a trusted local guide, if at all.[5]

Bourda Market

Another historic market with a clock tower, dating from 1880.[8] US government staff must avoid it in the evening.[5]

The Sea Wall

The sea wall protects the low-lying city from the Atlantic and is a popular place to stroll, especially on Sundays.[8] Avoid it after dark.[5]

Botanical Gardens and Zoo

Founded in the late 1800s on an old sugar estate, Plantation Vlissengen. Inside is the Seven Ponds (Place of Heroes), burial place of national figures, and manatees live in a nearby pond. The Guyana Zoo and Castellani House are next door.[9]

Promenade Gardens

A smaller garden in the city centre. Independence Park (the old Parade Ground) to the south was the site of executions after the 1823 rebellion.[10]

Museums and monuments

  • Walter Roth Museum of Anthropology, 61 Main Street: Indigenous cultures and archaeology.[11]
  • National Museum of Guyana, founded in 1868.[12]
  • Umana Yana, a giant Wai Wai style benab on High Street, built in 1972.[13]
  • 1763 Monument in the Square of the Revolution: a bronze statue of Cuffy by Philip Moore, put up in 1976.[14]
