How to register a trademark with the Commercial Registry at DCRA, what you need, how long it takes, and the fees DCRA lists.

General information only, not legal advice. Trademark law can be technical. A trademark agent or attorney-at-law can search existing marks and draft your application.

What a trademark is

DCRA describes a trademark as a mark used, or proposed to be used, on goods to show a connection in trade between the goods and the person entitled to use the mark, under Cap. 90:01 of the Laws of Guyana. A mark can be words, designs, letters, slogans, devices or symbols [1].

Who can apply

The producer can register a trademark, or use a trademark agent [2].

Steps (DCRA) [1]

  1. Draft the trademark application (DCRA suggests visiting a local trademark agent).
  2. Submit the application.
  3. Pay the prescribed fees.
  4. Uplift the trademark certificate.

Documents [1]

  1. Application for Registration of a Trademark
  2. A representation of the trademark or logo
  3. Authorisation from the owner to the trademark agent (if you use one)

Time and protection [2]

  • A certificate of registration takes about two to three months after all requirements are met.
  • Registration is valid for seven years from the filing date and can be renewed for a further fourteen years.
  • Registration protects your mark in Guyana only. To protect it abroad you must file in each country you want.

Fees DCRA lists [1]

Item Fee
New application G$100
Registration G$200
Association G$200
Renewal G$200
Restoration G$200
Merger G$300
Subsequent proprietor G$300
Alteration G$50
Change of name or address G$50
Lost certificate G$50

These are the amounts DCRA's page shows. They are very low compared with other DCRA fees, and agent fees are separate, so check with the office before you budget. DCRA accepts cash and manager's cheque [1].

Patents, designs and geographical indications

DCRA also handles patents, designs and geographical indications [3]. Check with the office for those processes.
