What Guyana Power and Light (GPL) and Guyana Water Inc. (GWI) ask for when you need a new connection for a home or business.

Requirements were checked on 24 October 2026. Deposits and connection charges are not published on the pages below, so check with the utility.

Electricity (GPL)

You apply for new service when you have a new home, are renovating or rewiring, or are moving into a rented house or apartment [1].

What you need [1]

  • National ID card or passport
  • Proof of ownership of the land or building (title or transport)
  • A Certificate of Inspection from the Government Electrical Inspector, Ministry of Public Works
  • In new housing schemes: an agreement of sale with the Government of Guyana, or an allocation letter with receipts showing full payment

Steps [1]

  1. Take your documents to the nearest GPL office.
  2. Sign the application and pay the security deposit.
  3. GPL does a site investigation.
  4. GPL contacts you to arrange installation.

GPL phone numbers by area [1]: Demerara 0475 or 226-2600; Berbice 333-2186; Essequibo numbers for Supenaam-Charity, Bartica, Wakenaam and Leguan are listed on GPL's page.

For a business, the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce lists applying for an electricity connection as one of its "Doing Business" steps [2].

Water (GWI)

GWI accepts applications through an online water supply connection form [3].

What the form asks for [3]

  • Documents: business registration (for a business), lease, tenancy agreement or transport
  • The name and address of the person to be supplied, and of the property owner
  • Whether the property is residential or non-residential
  • Any existing accounts for the property. Balances must be cleared before installation.
  • The size and number of connections (3/4 inch, 1 inch or 2 inch)

GWI contact [3]: Corporate Complex, Vlissengen Road and Church Street, Bel Air Park, Georgetown. Call centre (592) 227 8701; customercallcenter@gwi.gy. Monday to Thursday 8:00 to 16:30, Friday 8:00 to 15:30.

Safety note: when we checked on 24 October 2026, the older address www.gwiguyana.com redirected to an unrelated foreign website. Use GWI's current site, guyanawaterinc.com, which carries GWI's own contact details.
