Why this matters now
Guyana's economy is changing fast, and the way people pay is changing too. In March 2026 the President said a national payment platform and wider access to digital wallets should be in place within six months, and that businesses would need technology to take contactless payments (DPI, 23 Mar 2026). At the same time, more government services are moving online, such as the GRA's padna app for tax documents and returns (GRA).
Customers who pay by phone and deal with government by phone will also expect to find your business, your prices and your opening hours by phone. AI tools can help a one-person or five-person business keep up without hiring a marketing department.
Five things you can do this week
1. Write better posts and messages, faster
Use the R-T-C-F-C pattern from Lesson 2. Give the AI your real facts: what you sell, your prices, your hours, your location, how people can pay. Ask it for a Facebook post, a WhatsApp status or a flyer text. Then read every word before you post. Make sure it did not add a discount you never offered or a delivery service you do not run.
Example: a hardware store in Parika can ask for "a short post telling farmers we have new stock of water pumps, with a reminder that we are closed on public holidays".
2. Answer common customer questions
Make a list of the ten questions customers ask most: "You open Sunday?", "You deliver to Diamond?", "You take MMG?". Ask AI to help you write short, polite answers. Save them on your phone and paste them when someone asks. You are still the one replying, but you reply faster and more consistently.
3. Describe your products properly
A shop with 200 items rarely has time to write a good description for each one. AI can draft them from a few notes: "5 litre cooking oil, brand X, good for frying, $____". Use it to make a clean price list or menu that people can read on a phone. Fill in the real prices yourself.
4. Make sense of your numbers
This is where AI becomes really powerful, but only if you have records. If your sales live in a copy book, AI cannot help you much. If you keep your sales in a computer system or even a spreadsheet, you can export a summary (with customer names removed) and ask:
- "Which items sold the most each month?"
- "Which days are slowest?"
- "What should I reorder before Christmas based on last year?"
Always check the maths yourself on a few numbers. AI can make calculation mistakes, especially with long tables.
5. Plan and organise
AI is good at turning a messy idea into steps:
- "Make me a checklist for opening my shop each morning."
- "Write a simple staff roster for three workers, six days a week, in a table."
- "Draft a one-page plan for starting a small catering side business, with costs I need to find out."
Example: a snackette in Berbice (made-up example)
Imagine a shop owner, Ms. Singh (not a real person), runs a small snackette in Berbice. On Sunday night she spends 15 minutes with a free AI chatbot:
- She types her menu and prices and asks for a clean, phone-friendly menu. She fixes two mistakes it made.
- She asks for three Facebook posts for the week, one per weekday special, each under 50 words.
- She asks, "What are five low-cost ways to get more lunch customers from the nearby school and offices?" She picks two ideas that fit her budget.
She did not give it any customer details, any bank details or any password. She checked every price. That is good AI use.
Where AI can get you into trouble
- Wrong facts. AI may invent a price, a law, a tax rate or a health claim ("this tea cures diabetes"). Never post health, legal or tax claims from AI. False claims can hurt customers and can expose you to complaints.
- Copying others. Do not ask AI to copy a competitor's ad or another company's logo. Make your own.
- Fake reviews. Do not use AI to write fake customer reviews. It misleads customers and damages trust when found out.
- Customer privacy. Do not paste customer lists, phone numbers or receipts with names into free AI tools. Guyana passed a Data Protection Act in 2023 (Parliament of Guyana); see Lesson 8 for what that means.
- Scams that look like AI help. Be careful of anyone selling "AI that guarantees profits". No tool can guarantee sales.
Start small: a 30-day plan
- Week 1: Use AI only for writing posts and messages. Check every one.
- Week 2: Write your ten customer answers and a clean price list.
- Week 3: Get your sales into a digital record if they are not already. Even a spreadsheet is a start.
- Week 4: Ask AI one question about your sales summary. Act on one idea.
Going further
Some businesses need something built just for them: a custom order form, a booking system, or a tool that reads your sales data automatically.
Need custom AI software for your business? Computing Core builds custom software that runs in your web browser, with nothing to install. From US$500 (GYD 112,500). Email service@computingcore.net.
Key words
- Export: saving data from one system so it can be opened in another, such as a spreadsheet.
- Digital wallet: an app on your phone used to pay or receive money.
- Product description: a short text that explains what an item is and why someone would buy it.
